2011 Super Bowl Feb. 6 In Dallas: Packers-VS-Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers polished off the New York Jets on Sunday in the AFC Championship, booking a ticket to Dallas for the Super Bowl in the process. Like the Green Bay Packers jerseys in the NFC Championship, the Steelers looked to be running away with the game before the Jets came storming back. In a game of runs, the Steelers did just enough down the wire to secure the game, and a trip to the Super Bowl.

The Steelers scored the first 24 points of the game and looked to have the championship well in hand by halftime. The Jets could only muster a first half field goal, heading into the half down 24-3.

In the second half, the Jets came alive on both sides of the ball, nearly stringing together an impressive comeback. A 45-yard strike from Mark Sanchez to Santonio Holmes early in the half brought the Jets to within 14 and was the only score of the third quarter.

Halfway through the fourth, the Jets failed miserably from the Pittsburgh one-yard-line, turning the ball over on downs and squandering a good look at a touchdown. They did, however, come away with points after forcing a safety on the ensuing possession.

After a lengthy drive following the free kick, the Jets finally found the end zone again with Jerricho Cotchery’s four-yard catch. That was as close as they’d get as the Steelers were able to run out the clock over the last three minutes to seal the game and walk away with a 24-19 win.

The Steelers move on to Dallas to face the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl on Feb. 6. The Packers took home the NFC Championship earlier in the day, dropping the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, 21-14.

If you've been listening to me blabber on about my predictions for the playoffs, you may have noticed I blabbered on about the New Orleans Saints making it to Super Bowl XLV to play the New England Patriots.buy 2011 super bowl jerseys here

Reasons?

Why, I have plenty.

One, their defense is vastly underrated. They limited an explosive Atlanta Falcons team in Week 16.

Second, as we all know, their offense is one of the best in the NFL. With Drew Brees calling the shots, you can never count this team out.get saints jerseys cheap.

Third, the Saints have won seven of their last nine games.

Fourth, they are still being looked past in favor of the Packers, Falcons, and Eagles. Nothing like Brees sneaking up to you and biting you in the ass...wait, that came out wrong.

But...I have since grown skeptical of the Saints' chances since both Chris Ivory and Pierre Thomas were lost for the playoffs due to injury. As much as I love Brees, having Reggie Bush as your No. 1 running back and no one else is certainly not as formidable. Bush has never been very good between the tackles and excels on screen passes and outside runs. With him as the primary back, I worry about the Saints getting far.

Airfare website disputes spread

Expedia, the world's largest online travel company, will no longer list American Airlines flights on its website, lobbing the latest volley in a battle between the airline and some Web-based travel companies that could have a ripple effect on consumers.
Expedia stopped listing American's flights as of Jan. 1, after the two sides failed to resolve a dispute about a booking system that American prefers and that provides more information about services it offers for a fee, such as priority boarding.

American's fares are no longer available on Expedia-owned sites including Hotwire and TripAdvisor, but American flights remain on Expedia's corporate travel site, Egencia.
Expedia became the second major site in recent days to stop listing American flights. Delta stripped its fares from three smaller travel sites last month in an attempt to steer consumers to its own website and build brand loyalty.
The moves are prompting concern among some travel industry analysts that consumers will lose out as online booking options shrink and it becomes harder to compare fares between airlines.
"I think this is the beginning of a war," says Henry Harteveldt, a Forrester Research airline analyst. "My concern is, the customer is going to suffer."
Expedia said American's preferred booking system "is of questionable, if any, benefit to travelers, would be costly to build and maintain, and would compromise travel agents' ability to provide travelers with the best selection."
As of Dec. 21, American stripped its flights from travel site Orbitz because it also would not switch to the newer system. Two days later, Expedia began to make it more difficult for customers to get information about American's flights, listing its trips below other carriers' and requiring travelers to click on a link to see actual fares.
But American says fliers can find its fares on a variety of websites, including the airline's. "The type of fares that are sold by Orbitz and Expedia are fares we don't have a lot of difficulty selling," says Cory Garner, American's director of distribution strategy.
Disputes about the distribution of airline information are likely to continue as airlines and online travel firms renegotiate deals, says Harteveldt.
Still, some consumer experts say that if such battles result in more fliers having to go to an airline's site for information, carriers might be forced to improve service to woo online browsers their way.
"The decision ... for consumers will be, 'What airline's website should I go to?' and that's a question of loyalty," says Darron Billeter, an assistant marketing professor at Brigham Young University. "It will hopefully provide incentive for airlines to invest more in customer service and make it a more pleasurable experience."
In the meantime, Harteveldt says, American may have reason to worry. "This is not a move that helps American Airlines at this time," he says. "Because the travel agency sites are used so extensively ... (American) risks being overlooked by consumers who still have the option of hundreds of other carriers that travel agents sell."

Couple Commits $800,000 Game Show Goof. Or Did They?

Gabe Okoye and Brittany Mayti were just three questions from walking away with nearly a million dollars on the game show "Million Dollar Money Drop" when disaster hit.

"We went all the way and had close to a million dollars left," Okoye said.

The couple had $880,000 dollars when they were asked the fifth question in the seven-question game.

Host Kevin Pollak asked the young couple from Los Angeles: "Which of these was sold in stores first?"

The choices: the Macintosh Computer,Sony Walkman or the Post-it note.

Each team on the Fox show is given a million dollars at the start of the high-stakes game. They answer seven questions, each time deciding how much they want to wager on three possible answers. Whatever they wager on the right answer is what they get to keep. Wager nothing on the right answer and they're out of the game.

The couple agonized over how to gamble the $880,000 they'd earned to that point.

"When you get that much [money], even if it's just for a little bit, you make plans and dreams," Mayti said.

The couple planned to use the money for their wedding.

Mayti thought the Walkman was the correct answer. Okoye was convinced that the Post-it note was the correct answer. The two argued for their choices, all while piling heaps of cash on the blocks representing the answers.

Mayti caved and decided to go with her boyfriend and wager more on the Post-it.

"I really went with Gabe's instinct because he's so passionate," she said.

As the clock wound down, the couple bet $80,000 on the Walkman and $800,000 on the Post-it.

They fell to their knees when they heard the answer: the Walkman.

After missing the question and losing nearly a million dollars in a matter of seconds, they blew the rest of the game.

"We walked away with nothing," Mayti said.

"We were running on all cylinders," Okoye said. "After question five, we weren't really focused."

The blogging world is abuzz that Fox stiffed the couple, arguing that the Post-it is the correct answer.

What Came First -- The Post-it or The Walkman?

The Walkman hit stores in 1979. The date that the Post-it hit stores has been debated.

Some claim that it made its debut in 1980. Others argue that the little sticky note made its debut in the late 1970s when corporations first started using it, but before it hit stores nationwide.

According to 3M, the company that created the Post-it, the product was created in 1968, but didn't hit stores until 1980.

Still, the company did say that the product was used by people starting in the late 1970s. In 1977, the company tested the Post-it in four markets, but it didn't catch on. In 1978, the company launched the "Boise Blitz" in Idaho, giving samples of the little sticky paper squares to corporations and people there.

So who's right?

Okoye and Mayti left the game show not thinking twice that their answer might not really be wrong; but after their episode aired Monday, the couple started to wonder. Hundreds of people friended them on Facebook and sent them research that challenged the game show's answer.

"It would be nice to know exactly what the truth is just for the sake of knowing it. It's not really about the show. It's really, what's the real information," Okoye said.

Today they finally got their answer. Fox admitted that they goofed.

After sticking by their answer all week, the show's executive producer, Jeff Apploff, issued a statement late Thursday saying that, "unfortunately, the information our research department originally obtained from 3M regarding when Post-it notes were first sold was incomplete."

The producer promised to give the couple another shot on the show, saying, "we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the viewers who brought this to our attention, and we're thrilled to give Gabe and Brittany the opportunity to return to play the game."

The couple are still processing Fox's latest offer and don't want to comment just yet.

Still, they said that they are not angry at Fox, and though it took some time to get over losing $800,000, they're not upset.

"I was angry at first, but seeing him [Okoye] so hurt and remorseful about it, I was like, I love him more than his money," Mayti said.

The couple has used the experience to strengthen their relationship.

"It really wasn't about the money. I should have listened to Brittany at the time because she was so passionate about the answer and she went with me and my answer and really supported me," Okoye said.

Still, Okoye cringes every time he sees a Post-it.

"Every time I see Post-its, I'm like, 'Oh my God,'" Okoye said. "There's a 3M right down the street. Every time I drive by, I kind of laugh about it."

I am a Hollywood stereotype

With my current unemployment and things getting tight, I've hesitantly had to ask my older brothers for help with making the mortgage and paying bills. I've heard too that I've become the topic of some conversation in the family and realized that OMG I've become the very stereotype of the troubled bohemian younger brother that's the fodder of so many family dramedies.

You know probably exactly the holiday movies I'm talking about. They're usually set around big event like Thanksgiving or Christmas. There's always unresolved issues and tension. The younger brother usually just shows up unannounced out-of-the-blue. The younger brother that's always been a dreamer/writer/actor/artist. The one that has the history of bad decisions maybe drug use, maybe is gay and/or brings an interracial date. He's the one that makes all his older brothers look like uptight aholes, while the nieces and nephews all think he's cool.

Now I'm amazed just how quickly this happened. For if anything because of our family's rather storied history and past, I've been if anything, fiercely independent. If anything I've been the one that always tried to make an effort for family events, get togethers, and generally found my efforts for naught. It would get back to me years later through other relatives that I was actively omitted from family holidays, with invitations that somehow forgot to be mailed or my brothers conveniently forgetting just who's job it was to invite me and give me the who/what/when details. I even made a concerted effort to make all the family events for ten years straight despite these obstacles, then finally just gave up.

But recently some other things have changed. Both of my older brothers have now retired and it seems that this has mellowed them out greatly. They're no longer these stereotypical type A corporate VPs that are all about the big houses and that latest promotion. I think that finally too there is the acknowledgement that we grew up in two very different households. My older brothers grew up very much in a Leave it to Beaver family with a successful businessman/farmer dad, bright pretty mom. Where when I came along almost some 20 years later than my older brother, I got to experience our 70s family, the one where my father had passed away, my mother went through harrowing bouts of cancer, and remarried, giving us an abusive, alcoholic and mentally unstable stepfather. Where my older brothers grew up with Father Knows Best, my family resembled something much more from Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

The family drama was such too, that whenever we did meet for the occasional wedding or funeral. We always had the exact same conversation rehashing all the indignities and dramas of those tumultuous years. It was always sort of a bonding experience, but I would realize at some point though, that I've never actually had a serious real substantive conversation with any of my older brothers. We really don't even know each other.

So there's one of two ways these family dramedies always end. (A) The baby brother decides to accept help getting his life together, settling down, maybe going into the family business. He's usually given a check to pay off some debt from some wildly risky business deal, or to take care of bookies or drug dealers. Then the next morning when everyone gets up to open Christmas presents, he's sneaked away in the middle of the night. The family is crushed, knowing he's gone right back to his old ways, but comforted somewhat by the realization they did what they could. Or... (B) the family does a big reconciliation, there's heartwarming scenes of forgiveness and acceptance, and a renewed promise to be a "real" family.

I'm not sure at this point where this is all headed. I'm hoping for (B) but realize it's probably going to be something in between, hopefully as close to (B) as possible. There genuinely is a part of me that would like to think if I'm on the verge of being homeless my family would step in - I'm really not sure that that would really happen, it's not a premise I'd want to test. I think we all would like to think that if we fail in life from time to time our family is there - mine doesn't have much history with that. I do know that I have probably talked to my older brothers heard from them more in the past couple of months, than I have for years - I'm hopeful. There's the talk of a family reunion, but that's been floating around for years.

So I'm still waiting to see how this movie that is my life right now pans out. Just what sort of ending this chapter will have - Hollywood Happy Ending or Gritty French Realism?

as a participant in professional football since 1946, is Cleveland Brown's story is unique and not without controversy. Cleveland was without a team since 1996-1999, due to the type model moved from Cleveland to Baltimore. The story began as a member of the Cleveland Browns All-America Football Conference (AAFC), but joined the NFL when the league disbanded in 1950. The Browns won eight championships, including all titles AAC 1946-1950, and four more in the 60 years before the AFL and NFL merged in a league. The 40 and 60 have one big moment in the history of the Cleveland Browns, but since the merger, the Browns have not played in a championship game, or have reached the Super Bowl.
An interesting aspect of the story of the Cleveland Browns is the process that had only been appointed. Was her first coach, Paul Brown, general manager and vice president when it was established under the CAA. Because naming a team competition held, the team was named after him took place. Paul was already popular in Ohio in the professional and college sports, so that people felt was an appropriate name. However, Brown had initially rejected the election and instead decided to go with the Panthers name until a local businessman, said the team had started the rights to the name of the previous attempt, a new team in Cleveland. On this point, Brown said he had no option but the referendum, use the date of the team Cleveland Browns.

In 2006, ESPN did a decentish job of actually putting the games on screen, but – without naming any names – the commentary and coverage left a lot to be desired. Here’s an interesting report on ESPN’s World Cup 2006 coverage from ESPN Ombudsman George Solomon. I watched several games on Univision, and I don’t speak Spanish.

ESPN released a statement yesterday, outlining its plans for World Cup 2010. And it looks like good news.

We already knew that Sky Sports legend Martin Tyler (pictured, above left) will be the lead commentator. Which is a coup. The man knows his business, so there will be no “Michael Beckham” faux pas this year. Yesterday ESPN also confirmed that:

1. All 64 matches will be broadcast live.
2. In high definition.
3. On either ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC.

Of those 64 matches, 52 will be simulcast online at ESPN360.com. Which means many many Americans with be able to either secretly or not so secretly watch games at work 100% legally and in high quality (although the service is only available via certain internet providers). The only games not simulcast on ESPN360.com will be those being screened on ABC only. In which case, all you need is a TV and some bunny ears.

ESPN have also confirmed that every World Cup 2010 match will get a pre-game, half-time and post-game show, broadcast live and on location. As opposed to from Bristol, Connecticut. Teams coming out, national anthems and handshakes will all be broadcast. Which hasn’t always been the case.

Yup, you knew we had to do it. Come on, what kind of fashion site would we be if didn’t mark one of the industry’s favorite shows turned films, the staple of late 1990′s early 2000′s fashion diet? As we’re sure many of you know, next week marks the opening of Sex and the City 2 (the film) . The follow up to last year’s SATC 1 movie showcases the trials and tribulations of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte. SATC 2 is positioned to gross more than SATC 1, which made a reported $26.93 million in the US and Canada on its first day, so we’re pretty sure that studio execs are looking forward to your high-heeled adventure over to your local cinema this coming Thursday night. But what we at HVC want to know is, since 2010 has been a significant year for sustainability in fashion, what measures are the art direction team taking to mark this movement in one of the more influential billboards of American style?
Taking a look at SATC 2′s website, it’s apparent that green is not as much of a hot button as some Eco Fashionistas may have wanted. There is no mention of sustainability on the site, nothing that calls fans to fill your supply of cosmos in your own re-usable water bottle when attending the coast to coast viewing outings many SATC fans have planned. There is also nothing to be found on any of the social media pages, Facebook , Twitter, etc. So at the time of this post, there is nothing that could be found about the sustainable measures that the SATC crew has made to ensure a greener set/film for their four favorite girls to traipse on. That said, there does appear to be some hope, as always in the form of clothing.
In her NYT article Stephanie Rosenbloom which examines SATC 2 she notes that the style goddess responsible for the television and film parade of fashion, the one and only Patricia Field the go-to-gal for SACT fashion explains, “Ever since the beginning of the television series in 1998, the characters in “Sex and the City” have been adorned with a mishmash of contemporary and vintage fashions selected by Ms. Field.” Hooray for vintage!! It’s fast becoming a trend (which is something else to explore entirely) however, it’s the closest this reporter can come to finding a decent link between something sustainable and SATC. But will this be enough to translate the already sold out audiences at opening night?
There are a couple more questions to leave you with, dear reader, as we examine the potential for this highly influential moment in fashion to be marked on a sustainability scale. Firstly, the series was (up until the very end) all about New York City. The charm in that for many, this writer included, was seeing the concept of bioregionalism being brought to the style stage, and adopted. SATC for TV was always about New York, this was something that made viewers feel connected to their own fashion circles, even if vicariously through the 4 icons of style. It was even called Sex AND the City, and as Sarah Jessica Parker even remarked, New York City itself was also a main character.
The plot of SACT 2 is revealed on the movie’s website to involve “a glamorous, sun-drenched adventure, that whisks the women away from New York, to one of the most luxurious, exotic and vivid places on earth.” This statement is loaded for Eco and non Eco Fashionistas alike. It begs the question, are luxury and exotics dead in Manhattan? While this writer has not yet seen the film, the previews seem to indicate that this trip takes the girls to a Dubai-ish location, wherein all the riches of style await. Interesting concept, especially since many haute couture designers have been turning their gazes towards the UAE for some time now.

Finally, it is important to note that if you are an Eco Fashion Diva you can still enjoy many Eco Friendly ways to attend the SATC 2. Some nice ones are:

Bike or walk to see the film with friends
Plan an Eco Fashion night out at the movies, dressing up in your Eco Fashion finest
Educate one friend who you’re attending a showing of SATC 2 with about the benefits of Eco Fashion
Bring your own homemade goodies to the premiere (that’s what massive purses are for ladies!!)
Remember to shut all (and we do mean ALL) electric gadgets off prior to heading out for the night, an Eco Friendly home is a low energy diet home

Designer Maxazina is the undisputed king of what has been dubbed 'the bandage dress' - super-tight, elasticated dresses that are loved by celebrities for their figure-enhancing qualities.

The OC actress Rachel Bilson showed off her hour-glass shape in this cream version that highlights her curves and tan.

The trend has been much copied on the High Street, but these are usually made from cheap fabrics that don't pull in and shape the wearer.

But surely Herve Leger's £1,400 version would work its magic on any woman?

We tried it out on our size 14 model - and the results were so frightening you'd be forgiven for thinking she was off to a Halloween party dressed as a mummy!

The dress doesn't offer enough support for her bust, and is desperately tight around her hips and thighs.

It is also far too short, suggesting that these dresses are designed for only the most petite of women.

For a fraction of the price, a £95 cream Reiss dress with a gentle A-line and pleated hem detail is a far better choice, creating a defined waistline and flattering her legs.

Kate Winslet is the latest celebrity to squeeze herself into the Herve Leger bandage dress. It does wonders for the figure but what's it really like to wear? Rebecca Wilcox hit the streets of London to find out...

People in the photographic studio where I am waiting are nervously offering me tea, coffee and food, but all I can do is mutely shake my head.

If I were to open my mouth I would undoubtedly blurt out my desire for a large cheese sandwich, but I know I mustn't consume anything.

The reason for this arrives moments later in a House of Fraser bag the size of an envelope.

It's a Herve Leger dress. A dress so small and so tight that it coined its own fashion term: body con(scious). What a terrifying thought.

Who could ever look good in something that was made to make you feel self-conscious?

And yet, last week, Kate Winslet - who was once a heroine for curvy women - was photographed looking incredible in a Leger dress, one that was not too dissimilar to the item that will become my own personal hell for the next few hours.

It's the latest must-have garment and has been sported by celebs such as Rachel Weisz, Lindsay Lohan and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Such is the cachet of the Herve the Curve dress that there is now a host of similar dresses on the High Street from stores such as French Connection, Reiss, Lipsy and Topshop.

On the hanger, the Leger is gorgeous. But at £1,300 you would expect it to be something pretty special.

I quickly whip out my entire collection of control pants. I had thought that I could 'triple layer' them in order to get the smooth Winslet silhouette.

Alas, no. This, I discover, is a Princess and the Pea dress, under which even a small speck of glitter looks like an unsightly hillock beneath the heavy-duty spandex.

Bereft of my support hose I take one last breath before stepping into the dress. To my astonishment, it acts as its own pair of magic pants.

It's so tight that two of us struggle with the zip, but as soon as it's done up, something amazing happens.

My usually stooped posture is forced into an upright pose. My bosom is hiked up to the heavens, and my thighs are clamped together so tightly that walking is nearly impossible.

The bulge-bashing construction is great for the posture and acts like its own pair of control pants - but beware when trying to get around town

The dress has a bulge-bashing construction that feels similar to the deadly embrace of a boa constrictor. It is near to impossible to move in but does wonders for the figure.

I chance a glance in the mirror and am surprised to see I almost have a waist, perhaps even the hint of a smooth bum. Something that many hundreds of squats and lunges have still failed to deliver has been provided in moments by this remarkable dress.

The only thing I haven't done yet is breathe out. Nor will I. For while it cinches and smoothes in some places, it also rounds and protrudes in others.

Stomachs are a no-no under this thing. Love handles need to be sucked in, or vanished by exercise or surgery. No wonder that the typical 'bandage dress' devotee is someone like Cheryl Cole or Victoria Beckham - they are probably around a size ten if you stood the two of them side by side.

But then Kate Winslet looked great in hers, so I soldier on and attempt to live out a normal day in the dress. I realise at once that this is not the dress to do your shopping in. In fact, this is not the dress to do much of anything in other than stand still.

Stairs are an unfeasible challenge when your legs can move only six inches apart. Sitting is fine, but getting up and down from the chair needs skills that I clearly don't possess.

Trying to get out of a cab, meanwhile, involves a strange contortion and a good sense of humour.

Having said that I will love this dress for ever. Even though I couldn't eat, move or barely even breathe in it, it produced my first ever compliment from a stranger.

A man, just walking past, said: 'Wow'. That doesn't happen in my bog-standard jeans and flat shoes.

I didn't get the same reaction at all when I tried the £135 Reiss version.

At more than £1,000 cheaper, I was hopeful that this dress would, similarly, cling to every desired curve and hide the undesirable ones.

Instead, it limped its way over my frankly sagging bust - the neckline made wearing a bra impossible - and swelled dangerously over my stomach.

I had hoped to slink out of the changing rooms like some lithe, Spandexed wonder, instead I waddled my way towards the mirror appalled by what I saw.

As these body-con dresses go, this one was less bandage and more sack-age.

So I'm going to have to start saving, because I really want the real thing.

And anyway, breathing is overrated.

what 's the best Mother's Day presents? let me give you some advice.

few days ago, I did a voice-over for a Mother's Day commercial. I listed good motherly qualities in a loving tone, and prompted the masses to give their mothers what they really deserve.

It's the most I've done for Mother's Day since I made a shrunken Styrofoam cup planter for my mom in kindergarten. When people I know hear this, two questions come up: the first inevitably involves the possibly toxic effects of placing Styrofoam in an oven. The second asks, since my mom and I are very close, 'why wouldn't I honour her on Mother's Day?'

I would like to say it's not my fault. Neither of my parents favour what they term 'Hallmark Holidays.'

"Buy me flowers when you feel like it," Mom says.

"Not when someone else tells you that you should."

Mom and I have been close most of my life. She was my first teacher and mentor, and forgave me for the hell I put her though in my 16th year, so I don't see how it could have turned out any differently.

In kindergarten, she helped me learn to read with stories about Miffy the Bunny, and I'm sure that's what set me on the road to earning a degree in English literature.

Something else that put me on that road was my mother telling me from an early age to "be sure to go to university. Just get a bachelor's in anything. It will help you even if you go on to do something else." She was right, of course.

My brother and I rode in a 1965 blue Valiant to school, listening to talk radio or my mom. Both proved informative, but Mom held my attention more because she wasn't an anonymous voice and I loved her and thought her interesting.

She always read, primarily about religion, philosophy and death. Well, about death and the dying and their families - she used to volunteer as a grief support worker for the terminally ill. It taught me about approaching faith with an open mind, how to question my actions and reactions, and how to talk comfortably to someone who isn't long for this world. After elementary school, I graduated from Valiant Philosophy 101 and went on to Big Yellow Bus from Hell 200.

To put this stage in perspective, I must admit one thing: I was a nerd. Heavy, with thick glasses and long frizzy hair, I dressed, er, creatively, read all the time, loved talking to my teachers and played the baritone sax.

Any ex-nerds out there who have ever boarded a crowded school bus with a large instrument can identify with my experience: desperately trying to exude calmness while inwardly panicking about finding a free seat for me and my instrument, feeling watched, judged, and highly uncool.

Yet, in spite of how I felt, my mom thought I was beautiful and always remembered to tell me so. She knew I had a hard time, and to help me battle the awkward stages she instructed me on quick wit and comebacks. I now perform as an improviser regularly, but she was my first comedic professor, offering suggestions for timing and choice words. She helped build my sense of humour. As a serious, studious child struggling to fit in, I can only think that her efforts to bring my inner clown out helped me all the way to adulthood.

Throughout my youth, Mom instructed my brother and I in a number of other important areas: how to bake and how to wrestle being but two of them. Mom hated baking and would rather we did it. I took over when she started putting sunflower seeds in her chocolate-chip cookies, a not-so-subtle ploy that allowed her to wipe her floury hands free of baking for good.

The sunflower seeds had a greater impact than we first suspected; after I completed my literature degree, I put on kitchen whites and landed up to my elbows in cake batter as a pastry cook.

Wrestling also tops the list of childhood favourites. She would take on my brother and I and beat us both. I can only assume that this led me to a later interest in judo, which I eventually had to quit because my work in pastry had brought on tendinitis. With the demise of that career I entered the film industry and Mom said, "Oh, I always saw you doing something in film." She could have told me that earlier, I think, as a time-saving measure.

Additionally, Mom frequently "suggested" I return to studying French.

"You've put so much time in," she'd say. "You should stick with it. It will be useful."

I always fought this. I hated French. I liked almost every other language, and tongue-tested several of them before I caved and enrolled in a five-week French immersion class.

I did it because, you see, she was right. I do find it useful, and though I'm far from perfect at it, I use it while travelling, on government job applications, and in my attempts to be a better global citizen.

Last year, following my French class, I admitted to Mom that she was right. I'd oft suspected she was, and had already said it in my head. But I finally reached that certain age, which for me was near 30, when I could say it to my mother out loud: "You were right."

And I can't think of a better Mother's Day present than that.

Shopping in the recession: I have made an effort to buy items that carry over into different seasons. Previously, I'd go into a season and buy up all of the top trends. Some would look dated after a while and end up in one of the mounting piles of clothes I have set aside to be stored, given away to friends or sent to resale shops.

Loving: Skyscraper heels, bodycon skirts and dresses, boyfriend blazers, black skintight denim, tough leather jackets, florals for all seasons, jewel tones, statement necklaces, exposed zippers, nudes, draping, studs.

Hating: Headbands - like the kind that go across your forehead. Neon, anything with garish logos, Ed Hardy, wide plastic belts.

Would swap closets with: Ashley Olsen or Olivia Palermo.

Favorite places to shop: Colette in Paris, Blue & Cream in New York, Fred Segal in L.A., Barneys New York, Scottsdale Jean Company.

Best beauty advice: Take care of your skin and hair above all else. Create a routine that works for your skin type and stick to it. You don't need to use the most expensive products to get ideal results. Wear lots of sunscreen. Pare down your hair and makeup routine as much as you can - fresh, healthy, natural skin and hair is always, always in.

Signature scent: Stella McCartney "Stella"

Wants to try: The "Dynasty" trend. I used to play dress up with my mom's party dresses as a kid and a lot of them seemed inspired by the TV show. I wish she would have saved some of that stuff! A few alterations and poof, a fab Dynasty-inspired wardrobe for me!

Buying for fall: Shredded leggings, Balmain-esque shoulders, tough leather jacket, velvet pieces, studded accessories, skintight J Brands, a lace blouse, short leather gloves, a camel coat, and more tissue-thin white tee shirts.

Style is: Finding your own inner-glamazon and wearing your heart on your very fabulous sleeve. To me, style is about the way you wear the clothes, not what they are or who makes them. It's about confidence in a look that's uniquely you.

* Waistband Placement: The waistband should hit below the belly button and should be stretchy. You should feel support but it should not pinch or trigger spillover. "The key to avoid muffin top is to avoid wearing jeans that are WAY too tight," says Nate Freeman, Creative Director Of 4 Stroke, the indie rock n' roll-inspired label worn by the likes of Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. "If you are on the short side and have curves avoid super tight skinny jeans because they will make you look shorter and wider in the middle. Wear a slimmer straight leg in a dark wash."

* Avoid "Whiskering" and "Fading": "Whiskering" is the treatment applied to denim in which faded lines are added in the certain areas (usually the crotch, thighs, knees). Sometimes these lines can accentuate and widen your hips. "Fading" is to be avoided if you are craving a clean look. The denim discoloration will draw attention to unwanted areas (like the thighs and butt) and highlight them.

* Look for Clean Washes: Whether you chose a light or dark wash (the latter is generally the most flattering across the board), make sure the lines are kept simple. Contrast stitching, embellished pockets, or excessive distress can add volume. "Wash can help create a slimmer look," says Griffin. "Dark washes tend to be more slimming versus lighter washes."

* Pocket Placement: "This is very important," says Freeman. "In Europe I see lots of jeans with long pockets that come all the way down past the butt, and it looks good on about three people!" When shopping for that coveted pair of perfect jeans, your first instinct is to immediately turn around and look at how your butt looks. Assess the where the pockets hit on your body. The bottom of the pocket should be in alignment with the very top of your thigh. Low pockets will sag or flatten the butt instead of contouring it.

First impressions can be crucial, particularly at job interviews. So volunteers from the charity, fashion and beauty sectors came together for a style advice session for six visually-impaired women. Linn Martinussen reports

It was time to leave the house, but I had to check one final time if I looked OK.

I was on the way to an event that was going to be offering me and five other visually-impaired women advice on their clothes, make-up and general sense of style to help them feel more confident as they looked for jobs.

I was looking forward to hearing how I could improve my own look, but also nervous about how the experts would judge my current style.

The event was organised by Patsy Neal, from the consultancy firm Acumen Solutions UK, and Hetal Bapodra, who is blind, with the backing of the charity Blind in Business.

I asked Hetal where the idea for the event had come from. “When I know I look good,” she said, “I feel

like I have the confidence to take on the world, and I believe every woman has the right to feel like that, especially in interview situations and the workplace, where it is the most important.

“There was no-one doing this sort of thing and…whether we like it or not, people do judge on first impressions.”

Other organisations involved were the charity Dress for Success, which helps low income women in London find the right clothes for job interviews; T M Lewin, which makes business clothes; and Gina Conway Aveda, the London hair and beauty salons.

Each of us six women was paired with a volunteer from the financial services company Morgan Stanley, who were their guides and wrote down all the tips on clothes and make-up. These women, who were all professionals themselves, also passed on invaluable advice during the day.

“This is just going to be fun,” Hetal told us at the start of the day. “Look at this like a girly party without the wine, pizza or Chinese takeaway.”

We were split into two groups, one dealing with clothes and one dealing with hair and make-up.

Ann, a lovely New York girl from Dress for Success, asked me to describe my current style and how I would like to look.

I told her that, at work, I tried to go for a look which was both professional and sexy, and one that I could also wear if I wanted to go out in the evening.

“I can see that in what you’re wearing,” said Ann. “You’re wearing clothes that compliment your figure and you could wear them out to dinner as well as in the office.”

We talked about how I could expand my work wardrobe with a few different skirts and trousers, and the kind of tops I could wear to make me look original as well as smart and professional.

“An A-line black or grey skirt just above your knees would be perfect for you,” said Ann.

“Yes, and it would look feminine,” said Angela, my volunteer. “If you wear that with shirts and tops in different colours, and combine it with a dark suit jacket, it would be perfect. You could even wear a dress in combination with a suit jacket.”

After agreeing to go shopping with Ann, admiring some women’s suits from T M Lewin, and discovering that, really, I didn’t need to change my style at all, I felt good.

It was now time for make-up, the area I felt most insecure about. I tint my eye-lashes and have been told my complexion is good, so I tend to avoid lots of make-up. It just confuses me. Everyone I know seems to put it on differently and I don’t know which way’s right for me.

I chatted with Pheonix about my make-up. I told her I was using Clean and Clear from Boots, and how I did my make-up.

“Instead of pink eye-shadow and blush, which you say you tend to go for, I want to try some tinted moisturiser and some bronze brown eye make-up,” Phoenix said, and started gently cleaning my face.

As she put the make-up on, Phoenix explained exactly how she did it and what she was putting on, while Angela wrote everything down for me. I also had a go at putting on my own make-up and I was told that, if I stuck to what I’d learned today, I would always look fine when I went out.

The day was drawing to a close. I had bought some Aveda products, and been given a free goody bag of cosmetic products. Everyone seemed to have had a good day.

There are now plans for a follow-up event in September*.

On the tube home that afternoon I felt good, not only about my new look, but about the fact that Ann was going to take me shopping soon.

Mature models seen more on the runway

NEW YORK — Among the more avant-garde looks shown on the runways of New York, London, Paris and Milan was one that seems ho-hum in real life: gray hair.

More mature models — some even in their, gasp, 40s — were stars at the previews of fall styles. And in the fashion world, that's a radical turn from the use of models not old enough to drive a car, let alone wield a credit card.

“I wanted something different,” said Francisco Costa, creative director for the Calvin Klein Collection. “I wanted a cast that really represented a customer I design for, and that's not really a 16-year-old.”

Costa hired gray-haired Kristen McMenamy, who also appeared at Viktor & Rolf, as well as ‘90s sensations — and now mothers — Stella Tennant and Kirsty Hume.

Marc Jacobs, widely considered the most influential American designer, cast 47-year-old Elle Macpherson in his Louis Vuitton show, along with Bar Refaeli and Alessandra Ambrosio. Trendsetting Miuccia Prada used Ambrosio, Isabeli Fontana, Doutzen Kroes and Miranda Kerr — all best known as voluptuous Victoria's Secret models and all in their mid-20s, a relatively advanced age for runway models.

It's a smart move by the fashion industry to make itself more relatable to consumers. Costa acknowledges that the tough retail climate has helped force design houses to speak more directly to their customers.

“The woman who puts my clothes on needs a certain level of sophistication,” says Costa. “We wanted to acknowledge women who have always worn our clothes, women with their own identities, have full lives, have kids.”

It also may help counter perennial complaints about skinny models. It's said that age brings wisdom; it also usually brings curves.

The more mature look was on-trend with the chic, retro styles shown for fall, so helping models' health may be icing on the maybe-not-entirely-fat-free cake.

Still, Nian Fish, creative director at fashion-show powerhouse producer KCD, says designers, stylists, casting agents and modeling agents all collectively heeded the call to put forth a healthier image.

“This is fashion coupled with compassion,” says Fish, who helped the Council of Fashion Designers of America launch its health initiative back in 2007. “But I think the compassion came first, and then the fashion suited these bodies. I loved seeing these bodies in Prada. We're always looking for trends at Prada, and seeing Victoria's Secret girls on the Prada runway woke up a lot of people about what a women should look like.”

Older models have had far more success in print, where 41-year-old Christy Turlington and 39-year-old Claudia Schiffer, for example, still star in top-tier campaigns. But while ads have always been specifically crafted to sell something, the runway had been about fantasy.

The reaction to Costa's more womanly look — a shift from the house's usual almost androgynous muse — has been very positive, he notes. “You can see a Kristen McMenamy wearing the clothes. You can see a woman who's so cool, but her hair is so real — it's amazing,” he says.

“These runways looked great,” agrees Fish. “Our eyes adjusted very quickly because we wanted it to. Everything looked fresh and new. Seeing clothes on post-pubescent bodies didn't look fresh.”

The current controversy about models' weight actually goes back to the early ‘90s and the days of Kate Moss, her waif body and a look dubbed “heroin chic.” But the conversation turned to age at a panel discussion earlier this year where Kroes, 25, and Coco Rocha, all of 21, both said they weren't getting much runway work because of their age and curvier figures.

“I had been away from fashion shows seven or eight years, other than Victoria's Secret,” says Ambrosio, who also walked for Giles Deacon. “It was really nice to participate. It was surprising because, for such a long time, designers were only using girls that weren't so sexy, whose bodies were less curvy.”

It was a coup for her to be cast, she says, but it also helped score public interest in the shows.

“People were interested in the known faces on the runway,” she says. “We've all been working for such a long time, and the more you walk, the more you work, the more confidence you have. You can relax, smile more, add personality. You walk the way the clothes need to be shown.”

Ed Razek, president of Victoria's Secret, is amused that the fashion world is rediscovering boldface models, who, naturally, have to have a few years under her belt to become famous.

The first time he met Chanel Iman, she was already considered an It Girl in the fashion world, starting on the runways at 15. But she was too scrawny and young, Razek recalls. Now at age 20 she has a lucrative Victoria's Secret contract.

“She promised in the next year, she'd grow curves — and she did,” Razek says.

This season, girls of 13 or 14 were told this season to come back when they were a bit older, says KCD's Fish. And other models who looked unhealthy were advised to take the season off but with an open pledge to embrace them when they return after getting treatment.

The CFDA's voluntary wellness guidelines link age and health, even if they don't set specific standards, says Steven Kolb, the organization's executive director. There are standing recommendations that models under 16 not be hired and those under 18 not work past midnight and have supervision, rest and regular meals.

“The age and thinness thing go hand-in-hand,” Kolb says.

Fish says she hopes the younger girls do come back — with many more years of work in front of them. “This is all going to snowball now. Once these few key designers do this, it snowballs and it makes it OK for everyone else to do.”

Will McMenamy and her gray hair be back, too?

Costa won't commit, saying he does embrace newness. But, he adds, that doesn't have to be synonymous with youth.

“Kate Moss has grown up,” he says. “Now she's the woman I wish to wear my clothes.”
